Dr. Roya Nasimi joined California State University, East Bay in Fall 2023 as the first appointed Civil Engineering faculty member, coinciding with the launch of the program. Since then, she has developed and taught the core technical civil engineering courses for the first time in the school of engineering and played a key role in shaping the program and aligning the curriculum with ABET and licensure requirements to ensure student success.
Dr. Nasimi also enhanced the existing Surveying Lab and founded Dynamics and Smart Structures Lab (DSSL), where she serves as director and uses it as a hub for student learning and research. Alongside her primary role in Civil Engineering, Dr. Nasimi also supports the Construction Management and Industrial Engineering programs by teaching and contributing to courses that overlap with her expertise.
Dr. Nasimi earned her PhD with distinction in Structural Engineering from the University of New Mexico and her M.S. and B.S. degrees in Civil/Structural Engineering from the University of Tabriz. Before joining CSUEB, she was a postdoctoral researcher and instructor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where she taught Civil and Mechanical Engineering students. As a lead postdoc researcher at UNL, she contributed to a funded project that received the in Fall 2022.
Her research focuses on structural health monitoring, computer vision, artificial intelligence, and machine learning for infrastructure assessment. In addition to her U.S. Army Corps of Engineers project, she has led and collaborated on research funded by the Transportation Research Board (TRB), Tran-SET, and New Mexico Consortium, and has conducted numerous full-scale bridge experiments.
