College of Health

The Inaugural College of Health opened its doors in July 2025. It currently consists of Kinesiology, Nursing, Public Health & , Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences, and Social Work. The vision of the College of Health is to build a locally responsive and globally aware community of health professionals who, collectively and individually, will positively transform health outcomes in the San Francisco Bay Area region, California, and beyond.

Nursing Presented at DNPs of Color Speaker Series Online

Nursing Presented at DNPs of Color Speaker Series Online

On July 30, 2026, faculty from CSU East Bay Department of Nursing, Anna Livson and Dr. Marissa Rafael, held a presentation as part of the DNPs of Color Speaker Series online. The presentation was part of the session "Innovating Nursing Education for Equity: Simulation, Storytelling, and Culturally Responsive Care." The title of the presentation was "Building Nursing Students' Skills in Delivering Trauma-Informed Care Through a Simulation on Palliative Care."

The presentation showcased the collaborative work done between Marissa Rafael, as the clinical course lead for advanced medical-surgical nursing, and Anna Livson, a simulation educator and co-coordinator, and the rest of the simulation team in designing learning activities in which senior pre-licensure nursing students demonstrated competencies in providing compassionate care that is trauma-informed and built on the tenets of palliative care. Several people attended the event, including CSUEB nursing alumni and friends.

In June, Dr. Alina Engelman, a faculty member in the Department of Public Health, co-presented on accessible climate risk communication at the National Association for the Deaf conference with Diedre Tanenberg from the San Francisco Department of the Environment.

Faculty & Student Highlights

Kinesiology Received Gold Status at ACSM


The Kinesiology Department presented at and attended the American College of Sports Medicine Annual Conference (ACSM) in Salt Lake City at the end of May. The Kinesiology party included Dr. Jennifer Sherwood, Dr. Albert Mendoza, and Lab Tech Emily Van Horn; undergrads: Viviana Preciado, Angelos Resendez, Mohit Prasad, and Jimena Calderon Mendoza.

Dr. Mendoza presented the proposal for a study on sedentary behavior in an aphasia population. There were 4 posters presented on an exercise intervention in a thalassemia population. The Kinesiology Department received a gold status award for their "Exercise is Medicine: On Campus" program.

Dr. Atencio Speaks on the World Cup's Impact


   

Dr. Matthew Atencio, faculty in the Department of Kinesiology, has been featured in a KQED article, on KQED radio, and on CBS News Bay Area! From traveling in Scotland in mid-June to attending watch parties in the East Bay, Dr. Atencio was very involved in the World Cup festivities.
