As we approach the end of the semester, we'd like to offer a few practical strategies to help manage workload and stress. You're also invited to use the Office of Faculty Development's drop-in space for grading, on your own or with colleagues. While you're there, please enjoy coffee, tea, and snacks.
Grading Strategies that Save Time:
-
Batch similar tasks: Grade one question or section across all students before moving on.
- Work in focused blocks: 60-90 minute grading sessions tend to be more sustainable than long stretches.
- Alternate tasks: Switching between grading and lighter tasks (e.g., emails) can reduce fatigue.
- Triage workload: What needs to be completed now, what can wait, what can be streamlined or deferred.
Protecting Your Time and Energy:
-
Take intentional breaks between grading blocks (even 10–15 minutes can reset focus)
-
Set a realistic daily stopping point to help maintain your energy
-
Simplify daily decisions where possible (e.g., plan meals, simplify routines)
- Get outside: Taking a quick walk or simply moving can help manage stress
