This scholarship is especially meaningful because it represents more than financial support, it is a reminder that my story, perseverance, and purpose matter. I would like to acknowledge my son, Jay'Mari, who inspires me every day to keep moving forward. I am also grateful to my parents, professors, mentors, and the Sankofa Scholars and AAFSA communities for believing in students like me. Access to resources and financial support can make all the difference for students pursuing higher education, and I am truly thankful for this investment in my future.

My mother worked for the Oakland Public Schools and later opened a family daycare, where her love for children and her natural “way” with them inspired many parents to seek her guidance. In continuing the caregiving legacy I grew up with, I stayed connected to my love of children by working as a nanny and as a substitute teacher in after‑school programs throughout the Bay Area, until I began working as a Cosmetology Instructor at a local beauty college.

Of the seven children in my family, I am the first to have the opportunity to pursue a bachelor’s degree. It has taken me many years to reach this point, and even though my life is in transition, I’ve learned there is never a “perfect time.” I’m embracing this moment fully and making the very best of it.

I give special thanks to my mother, my Queen, my #1 cheerleader, and my lifelong example of unconditional love, devotion, and determination. She grew up in an era when people of color were denied opportunities, rights, and freedoms. Because of that, she always encouraged us to learn all we could, seize every chance to grow, and use our education to enrich our lives and uplift others. Her work ethic and grit taught me to “grab life by the horns” and pursue my best life with courage and intention.

I also want to express deep appreciation for two of my professors, Professor Christina Chin‑Newman and Professor Mariana Guzzardo. Their constructive feedback and recognition of my writing and communication style strengthened my confidence as a scholar. Professor Chin‑Newman’s encouragement to consider pursuing a Master’s Degree became a defining moment for me, a reminder that the sky is truly the limit.

Receiving the AAFSA Scholarship is a profound honor. It affirms my resilience, my academic dedication, and my commitment to serving my community. I am grateful for the opportunity to share my story, and I hope it inspires others who are balancing school, family, and service to keep moving forward with faith and determination.
