General

The project is anticipated to take about 18 months and the target date of completion is December 2026.

While it is undeniable that emerging cloud technologies impact the environment, Microsoft has reportedly made strides and are committed to reduce or eliminate its carbon footprint. Evidence of these efforts and commitment can be found and here.

According to Microsoft: 

Safari and Chrome: Microsoft 365 is designed to work with the current version of the Safari and Chrome browsers.

Microsoft Edge: Microsoft 365 is designed to work with the latest version of the Microsoft Edge browser. Microsoft 365 might continue to work with older versions of the Microsoft Edge Legacy browser, but Microsoft can’t provide any guarantees.

Firefox: Most Microsoft 365 apps are designed to work with the current version of Firefox. However, Firefox does not fully support Microsoft Teams meetings.

Microsoft Teams meetings are fully supported on the latest versions of Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome. For more details on browser support for Teams meetings, see Limits and specifications for Microsoft Teams: Browsers.

Applications served by the campus are and can be authenticated by our Identity Management system (IDM) and is not dependent on application suites like Google; i.e., there will be a reconfiguration (if needed) that maintains user credentials between applications seamless. Additionally, other third party applications used by the community is dependent on the email address as an ID, and not the platform.

Not necessarily. Microsoft and Google application bundles are licensed differently. Of greater consideration is how much value we can derive from our Microsoft licensing (which includes MS 365 Copilot): for example, a majority of the cost in Google comes from storage and while Microsoft's rates are similar, the licensing in MS allows us to not have to invest in tools such as desktop anti-virus, back-end security features, and teleconferencing (MS Teams vs. Zoom costs).

Yes, part of the project is to migrate email and file data to Microsoft 365 Copilot and OneDrive.

Copilot access is available as part of our licensing and if MS Teams is used, it can recap meetings. This requires a Copilot license, however and will need to be requested.

If you choose to Save to One Drive it will go to your OneDrive - My Files - Attachments folder.
If you choose Download, it will download to your computers download folder.

Outlook Suite

To change the layout of outlook in browser select the gear in the top right. Mail > Layout

Select the gear in the top right. General > Notifications. Here all outlook notifications can be managed. Select expand to see more options.

Collaboration

Yes, Microsoft 365 Copilot has both local client and web versions of its suite that can be installed on a variety of OSes including MacOS.

Slack will still be available to those who are using it; however, it is in consideration for migrating to its Microsoft counterpart (Teams) in future phases of the project.

Documents can be shared within the application both in the web and local client (share button) as well as through OneDrive.

Zoom will still be available to those who are using it; however, it is in consideration for migrating to its Microsoft counterpart (Teams) in future phases of the project.

To ensure you are not missing anything after the migration, you can take a screenshot of your calendar surrounding the migration date and double check that nothing is lost post migration. Regardless, yes, all of your past and future events/meetings should be migrated. 

Storage

For the first phase of migration, Google Shared Drive is not being migrated, you will still access your Shared Drive through Google.

First Phase of migration is:

  • Gmail to Outlook Mail
  • Google calendar to outlook calendar
  • Google My Drive to M365 OneDrive

Not true; applications have full functionality for editing options for both web and client versions for the traditional suite of Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc. Real-time collaboration and co-authoring of documents are also available.

As with our current limits in user personal drives, OneDrive will have 100GB available for each user.

Shared drives are on a group-need request basis but usually starts at 5GB for the group; the same as the current limits in shared drives.

Yes, the shared drives in Microsoft 365 Copilot is accessible through Sharepoint, Teams, and OneDrive.

There is no limit to the number of files, only in the total storage space utilized on a per user and group share basis.

The Microsoft 365 Copilot licensing for the campus allows for enterprises and institutions to enable and maintain compliance controls, which allows for sensitive data to be stored with full compliance to standards such as HIPPA.
