Elia Varela
Program: Master of Public Administration, Public Management & Policy Analysis Emphasis
Undergradate Degree: B.A. Ethnic Studies, Concentration in Comparative Ethnic Studies
Transferred From: Chabot College
Born and raised between San Francisco and Hayward, Elia's journey at AVÀÇ has been defined by leadership, community, and a commitment to creating spaces where students feel they belong. As a proud #madeinHayward student, she has attended Hayward High, transferred from Chabot Community College, earned her bachelor's degree at CSU East Bay and is now pursuing a Master of Public Administration with an emphasis in Public Management and Policy Analysis.
As a first-generation college student, Elia is motivated by her family, ancestors, and the future she is working to build. Her experiences as a transfer student inspired her passion for helping others navigate higher education and find a sense of belonging on campus. Throughout her time at East Bay, she started off by being a PIAA student, has served as an Orientation Leader, was the Lead Transfer Ambassador for the Transfer Student Program and a Campus Involvement Ambassador for the Student Leadership & Involvement Center. She also co-founded and currently serves as President of Wayfinders, the university's Pacific Islander student organization, and has held leadership roles with Tau Sigma, the National Honor Society for Transfer Students and Associated Students Inc. in their Elections Committee. Today, she serves as the Graduate Student Assistant for the Parent and Supporter Programs.
To Elia, being a Pioneer means taking risks even when the outcome is uncertain and trusting that today's efforts will help build tomorrow's opportunities. She believes strong communities are built through mutual support and showing up for one another. Her personal motto reflects that mindset: "To be a part of a village, you need to be a villager. Inconvenience yourself."
Outside of campus, Elia enjoys junk journaling, exploring the cities within the Bay Area through public transportation, collecting Smiskis and spending time with her cat.
