Accessible Facilities

Overview: accessible facilities at AVÀÇ

AVÀÇ is committed to providing accessible facilities and physical environments so that students, employees, and visitors with disabilities can participate fully in campus programs and activities. This work supports compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, California building codes, and CSU policy.

Facility accessibility includes:

  • Accessible routes between buildings, classrooms, parking, and transit stops.
  • Entrances, doors, elevators, and restrooms that can be used with mobility devices.
  • Classroom and study spaces with adjustable furniture and assistive technology.
  • Signage, maps, and wayfinding that help everyone navigate the campus.

Accessibility Services, the Assistive Technology Office (ATO), Facilities Management, Parking & Transportation, and other campus partners collaborate to remove barriers in the built environment and respond when issues are reported.

Assistive technology labs & study spaces

The Assistive Technology Office (ATO) provides assistive technology tools and training to students registered with Accessibility Services, and supports faculty and staff who use assistive technology as part of workplace accommodations.

Assistive Technology Office

The ATO (LI 2550) offers:

  • Assistive technology assessments and training.
  • Loaner hardware, software, and laptops with assistive tools.
  • Support for using screen readers, text-to-speech, magnification, speech recognition, and more.

Learn more on the ATO “About our services” page.

Learning Commons & public workstations

The Learning Commons and other campus computer labs provide:

  • Stations with tools such as JAWS, ZoomText Magnifier, Fusion, and Dragon NaturallySpeaking.
  • Height-adjustable tables and flexible seating where available.

For questions about accessible technology locations or features, contact Accessibility Services or the ATO.

Accessible routes, transportation, and parking

Navigating our hillside campus can be challenging. Several resources support accessible travel to, from, and around campus:

  • Accessible transportation: The Accessible Transportation page explains current transportation options and how Accessibility Services can help coordinate classroom location changes or other supports when needed.
  • Accessible parking: Information about accessible parking locations, permits, and use of accessible stalls is available on the Accessible Parking page.
  • Campus maps: Campus maps include icons for accessible parking, elevators, and routes. See the Facilities and parking map (PDF) for current information.

If you have questions about getting to class, planning a route between buildings, or accessing transportation with a disability, contact Accessibility Services.

Accessible furniture & classroom setup

Some students need specific furniture or classroom layouts to participate fully in courses—for example, height-adjustable tables, ergonomic seating, or clear space for mobility devices. These accommodations are coordinated through Accessibility Services and Facilities Management.

  • Accessible Furniture accommodation: The Accessible Furniture page explains how this accommodation is implemented and how it helps remove barriers in the physical classroom environment.
  • Other accommodations affecting facilities: Some accommodations—such as Accessible Testing locations or Accessible Media—may involve specific rooms or equipment. More details are listed on the Accessibility Services accommodations page.

Instructors who have questions about furniture or room setup for an approved accommodation can work with Accessibility Services and, when needed, Facilities Management.

Report a physical accessibility barrier

If you encounter a barrier in the built environment—for example, routes, entrances, elevators, restrooms, classroom furniture, or signage—please let us know so we can address it.

You may:

  • Complete the and submit it to Accessibility Services.
  • Visit the Complaints & Appeals page for more information about reporting barriers and follow-up processes.

For immediate safety concerns (such as an elevator outage, blocked accessible route, or other urgent hazard), call 9-1-1 in an emergency or contact the University Police Department at 510-885-3791.
