Digital accessibility archive 2023

This page provides an archive of selected 2023 workshops and activities related to digital accessibility and online teaching at AVÀÇ.

These materials are preserved for historical and reference purposes. They may not fully reflect the most current guidance for ADA Title II or WCAG 2.1 Level AA compliance.

For current expectations, timelines, and support, please use the main Accessibility compliance for digital teaching and learning page and the campus Accessible Technology Initiative (ATI) website.

2023 workshops and recordings

In 2023, Online Campus and campus partners offered workshops that introduced faculty and staff to accessibility expectations in Canvas and digital course materials. A selection of themes is summarized below.

Approximate time Session focus Recording Slides or materials
Spring 2023 Canvas basics and course templates (introduction to accessible course structure) Recording available on request from Online Campus Slides available on request
Summer 2023 Accessible documents and media for online and hybrid courses Recording available on request from Online Campus Handouts and examples available on request
Fall 2023 Using Canvas tools (modules, pages, assignments) to support accessible course design Recording available on request from Online Campus Slides and sample module layouts available on request

Because many 2023 sessions were early in the campus transition to Canvas and digital accessibility tools, the most current versions of these topics may appear in later year archives or on the main digital accessibility page .

2023 guidance and planning themes

Key themes in 2023 laid the foundation for the more formal ADA Title II planning and checklists that followed in 2024 and 2025:

  • Course organization and navigation: encouraging use of modules, home pages, and clearly labeled content to support all learners, including those using assistive technology.
  • Document and media accessibility: introducing the idea of using headings, alt text, captions, and sufficient color contrast in course materials.
  • Awareness of legal obligations: early communication about ADA, Section 504, and Section 508, and how they apply to digital teaching and learning.
  • Partnerships: reinforcing that Accessibility Services, Online Campus, and the campus ATI team work together to support faculty and students.

Later resources, such as the digital accessibility dashboard and AY 2025-26 course materials checklist, build directly on these 2023 foundations.

2023 communications and announcements

In 2023, digital accessibility was featured in a variety of communications, including:

  • Online Campus faculty newsletters and reminder emails
  • Department and college meetings, especially around course template adoption
  • Initial references to upcoming federal changes that would later become the ADA Title II digital accessibility rule

Common messages included:

  • Encouraging faculty to begin reviewing high impact materials (syllabi, core readings, videos)
  • Highlighting resources from the campus ATI site and CSU systemwide guidance
  • Promoting the use of Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace accessibility checkers

Copies of specific 2023 emails or slide decks can be requested from Online Campus if needed for documentation or departmental planning.

How to request older materials

If you need access to a specific 2023 workshop recording, slide deck, or email announcement that is not listed here, you can request it from Online Campus.

When requesting materials, please include:

  • The approximate month and year of the session or message
  • The title or topic (for example, "Canvas basics and course templates")
  • How you plan to use the material (for example, department training or personal reference)

Online Campus can help locate the most relevant and up to date resources for your needs, and may recommend newer materials when appropriate.
